History

For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been recognized as one of the most effective youth-service organizations in the United States.

It is the oldest and largest mentoring organization in the country, serving young people nationwide, including more than 1,100 youth in central Indiana this past year alone.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana formed as a result of a merger of two strong organizations, Big Brothers of Greater Indianapolis (founded in 1970) and Big Sisters of Central Indiana (founded in 1971).

These organizations operated successfully for 30 years before the boards of both agencies agreed to merge operations and missions in 2002.

Since then, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana and its dedicated core of volunteer mentors have continued to help young people grow into caring, competent, and confident adults.
